The Akwa Ibom International Stadium, nominated for the 2014 Stadium of the Year award
Nigeria’s most modern stadium, the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, has been nominated for the 2014 Stadium of the Year award.
According to a press release from StadiumDB, which keeps a database of stadia worldwide, the newly built Stadium in Uyo, nicknamed “Nest of Champions”, is among venues nominated for the award.
A breakdown reveals that the current edition includes 32 major stadiums opened in 2014. Eight are located in Brazil, three in the USA, while Hungary and Poland each have two nominees.
“It’s great to see a new stadium for Nigeria to be proud of. Its white outer cladding and illumination also make it stand out globally and become a true landmark for Uyo,” Grzegorz Kaliciak, founder of StadiumDB.com, organiser of the competition, said.
Officially opened on November 7, 2014 by President Goodluck Jonathan, the Akwa Ibom International Stadium is set to be the new hub of sporting activities in Nigeria even as the Super Eagles have already adopted the stadium as their new home-ground, same as the U-23 team, Dream Team VI.
Seen as a largely transparent award, stadium enthusiasts from around the world have been accorded the chance to select their Stadium of the Year.
“Each internet user may vote only once by selecting five most favourite stadia. Within the first four days over 25,000 people have given their vote through dedicated online platform. The vote is open until February 17,” the organizers said in a press statement.
“A separate vote is run by the competition jury, consisting of famous architects from five countries. Bob van Bebber and Mike Bell from South Africa designed stadiums of the 2010 World Cup, while Bruno Campos from Brazil was one of the architects of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The jury also consists of John Bontinck (Belgium), Bryan Roe (Ireland) and Serban Tiganas (Romania).
The Public Vote and Jury Vote awards will both be announced on February 19.
The Stadium of the Year is held every year in January and February by Stadiony.net and StadiumDB.com, two websites dedicated solely to sports stadiums. The current edition is already the fifth one. Previous winners include Aviva Stadium (2010), PGE Arena Gdansk (2011), Gremio Arena (2012) and Ghelamco Arena (2013).

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development on Thursday announced that there
has been unusual high mortality in two poultry
farms and live bird markets in Kano and Lagos
States.
It said samples forwarded to the National
Veterinary Research Institute tested positive for
H5 strain of Avian Influenza Virus, otherwise
known as bird flu, adding that confirmatory
samples were sent to the International Reference
Laboratory in Padova, Italy, for further
characterisation.
Avian influenza, known informally as Avian flu
or bird flu, refers to influenza caused by viruses
adapted to birds.

infectious disease caused by the influenza virus.
The ministry, in a statement, noted that it had
taken some measures in the affected sites to

It said, “All state directors of veterinary services

“The World Organisation for Animal Health and

dead carcasses and poultry products and timely

“We wish to assure the public that, given our

Messi: I have no intention of leaving Barca
Chelsea and Manchester City have both been heavily
linked with a move for the Argentina superstar but he insists that he does not want to leave Camp Nou
Lionel Messi insists has launched a scathing attack on “lies” suggesting he wants to leave Barcelona having fallen out with head coach Luis Enrique.
The Argentina superstar has been heavily linked with both Manchester City and Chelsea in the past week, with the Catalans in behind-the-scenes turmoil following the sacking of the club’s sporting director, Carles Puyol’s departure and early elections being called.
Messi and Enrique’s relationship was believed to be broken beyond repair after the 27-year-old was benched against Real Sociedad – a match Barca lost 1-0 – and it is suspected that the forward was pushing for the coach to be dismissed.
But Messi has hit back at such claims, insisting that he has no “rivalry” with the former Roma boss, and lashed out at sections of the media for throwing “sh*t” at the Catalan club.
“I never demanded anything to stay, as I have no intention of leaving,” he told Barca TV. “It is not good to look for rivalry between Luis Enrique and me, because there is none.
“We must be more united than ever. They should not throw sh*t at us. We just want to achieve things for the club.
“I never demanded anything to stay, as I have no intention of leaving.
“It is said that my father spoke with Man City, with Chelsea.
It’s all lies, it’s all lies .” Messi scored once as Barca ran out 3-1 winners over Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday ahead of Monday’s Ballon d’Or presentation when he is competing for the best
player in the world prize with Cristiano Ronaldo and
Manuel Neuer.
But Messi is relaxed heading into the ceremony – which takes place on January 12 – and has praised the respective seasons of his rivals.
“Whoever wins the Ballon d’Or will deserve it, whether it is Neuer or Cristiano, who had incredible year,” he added.
