Police arrests seven suspected kidnappers, rescue abducted Onitsha bizman

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers for ransom have abducted an Onitsha-based businessman simply identified as Abu Okafor.
Although a police source confirmed, yesterday, that the victim had been rescued by men of Anambra State Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, within 24 hours of the abduction, the incident occurred at about 8.00 p.m. along Enugu Road, GRA, Onitsha when the four-man kidnap syndicate struck as he came out from a drinking parlour to ease himself.
According to the source, the victim was the owner of a filling station at ‘33’ area of Onitsha suburb.. It was gathered that the gunmen might have trailed him to the bar, abducted him and speed off. Meanwhile, the vehicle that was used to take him away was said to have been seen at a compound in ’33’ and a joint team of police and soldiers stormed the compound, recovered the vehicle and arrested seven suspects without the victim at the first attempt. But on a second rescue operation carried out by SARS, the victim was reportedly rescued, even as there was not clue as to whether his relations paid ransom.
The Police Area Commander for Onitsha, Ezekiel Philip, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, who confirmed the incident, on phone yesterday, told newsmen to contact the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Central Police Station, CPS, Onitsha, Mr. Isa Abubakar, for details.
When contacted, Isa also told newsmen that the victim had been rescued, adding that the suspects had been transferred to SARS headquarters, Awkuzu.

[Must Read]: Side Effects Of Abortion

Abortion as generally known is the medical process of ending a pregnancy so it does not result in the birth of a baby.
Research has shed more light on the disadvantages of having an abortion.
According to The Foundation for Africa Cultural Heritage, cancer is now one of the risks associated with undergoing an abortion. According to FACH president, Dr. Nkechi Asogwa, many cases of bosom cancer have been linked to the aftermath of an abortion.
Asogwa further said that contraceptives and other birth control pills that have been banned in the United States due to their side effects were being shipped to Nigeria, adding that Nigerians deserve to be told the medical risks involved in taking birth control pills, to enable them to make informed choice.
According to her:
“When you terminate a pregnancy you end many ongoing processes in the body such as the preparation of bosom for the secretion of milk. So the tissues that were cut off suddenly would become fragile and they can trigger the formation of cancerous cells in the bosom.
There are about five health implications attached to most of these drugs and that was why they were banned in the West. But here, no one is asking questions”
Bomedical scientist, Obianuju Ekeocha speaking at the forum also warned that abortion might damage the womb and lead to future infertility.
She called on the Federal Government to resist any pressure from international partners to legalise abortion.

President Jonathan Signs N4.425tn 2015 Budget

According to a report by Punch, President Jonathan has signed the 2015 Appropriation Bill into law.
It was revealed that Jonathan decided to sign the budget into law a couple of weeks ago. The Senate had passed the 2015 budget on April 28, following the passage of the same bill by the House of Representatives on April 23, with an expenditure budget of N4.493tn, up from the N4.425tn proposed by the Executive.
Nigerians were concerned to know if the budget will be signed before the May 29th handover date, now we know it’s been done.
However, a Presidency source informed Punch, that the President signed the budget about two weeks ago immediately after the document passed by the National Assembly was transmitted to him.
The source, however, said he did not know why the President chose to sign the document without making it public.
When contacted, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, also confirmed that Jonathan had signed the budget.
The Senate, in passing the budget, slightly reduced the N2.607,601, 000,300 proposed by the Executive to N2.607,132,491,708 as recurrent expenditure and simultaneously scaled down the capital expenditure from N642,848,999,699 estimated in the proposal to N556,995,465,449.
The Chairman, Joint Senate Committee on Appropriation and Finance, Mohammed Maccido, explained that the details of the figure approved by the Senate in the document were not different from the version passed by the House of Representatives.
He added that the budget would be driven by $53 oil benchmark, an exchange rate of N190 to one US dollar; 2.2782m per barrel crude oil production per day; and a deficit gross domestic product of -1.12 per cent.
The budget also put fiscal deficit at N1.075tn; N953bn for debt service; N375.6bn as statutory transfers.
Education takes the lion’s share of the budget with N392.3bn; followed by the military which gets N338.7bn while police commands and formations will receive N303.8bn.
In the same vein, N237bn was voted for the health sector; N153bn for the Ministry of Interior while N25.1bn was budgeted for the Ministry of Works.

10 Foods You Shouldnt take Before Going to Bed

Some of us tend to worry over stressful situations, so our last meal of the day, should not be one of the reason for our sleepless nights. What we chose to eat before we go to bed can drastically affect our sleeping patterns.
While, there are some foods, which can induce sleep, other foods, particularly junk food or fired food can give us sleepless nights. So if you are looking for a good night’s rest, here are our top 10 foods to avoid before bedtime.
* Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant, which causes an effect on the brain, which enables people to stay awake. This effect can last for up to five hours after consumption before its effects wear off. So unless you want a sleepless night, skip that cup of coffee after dinner.
* Alcohol: You may think that a few glasses of alcohol will put you to sleep, but the truth is that it will only make you drowsy or make you pass out. Do not expect to have a good revitalising sleep after consuming alcohol.
* Cola: Many people cannot do without their glass of cola after dinner. Colas contain sugar and caffeine and will keep you up. Even if you try to sleep, you may keep waking up to pee as cola contains no nutritional value and is simply flushed out by the body.
* Spicy food: Most Indian food is spicy and can cause an increase in the amount of stomach acid, which could result in a burning feeling in your chest and stomach along with bloating and uneasiness. So chose a mildly spice meal before bedtime or ensure that you have your dinner at least three hours before you go to bed.
* Red meat: Red meat is filled with fats and proteins and takes a very long time to digest. If you consume red meat before bed, your body will be busy all night long trying to digest it and will therefore, cause uneasiness or even cramping. When you go to bed at night, your body also needs to rest, so avoid eating red meat before bedtime.
* Fried food: Fried food is an easy way to curb hunger pangs, but one should know that fried food like chips and French fries are high in saturated fats and take a long time to digest. When you try to sleep after consuming junk food, you may feel discomfort or even cramping. Trya quick veggie snack like raw carrots or nuts, if you feel hungry before bedtime.
* Chocolate bar: Chocolate bars are high in sugar and fat, which causes a sugar rush and can keep a person up for a long time. They also contain caffeine that is a known stimulant, which makes a person stay up longer. So, avoid eating a bar of chocolate before bedtime.
* Candy: A piece or several pieces of candy is usually an easy dessert substitute before bed. But a study published in The Journal of The Mind and Body, states that seven out of ten people have nightmares after consuming junk food like candy bars because they act like a trigger to create nightmarish brain waves. So, avoid eating candy and other hard boiled sweets before bedtime.
* Ice-Cream: Ice-cream may be comfort food, but it can have an adverse effect when consumed just before bed. Ice-cream contains fat, which is not easily digested. It also has a lot of sugar that makes you stay up late. To top it off, there are studies which show that consuming sugary foods before bedtime can cause nightmares and disrupt sleeping patterns.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s Portrait Disappears In Kano Offices

The portrait of President Goodluck Jonathan is gradually disappearing in federal institutions, business centres and other public offices in Kano State.
Constitutionally , Jonathan ’s portrait should adorn public offices and institutions until his handover on May 29.
But our correspondent observed that the portrait of President- elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, have taken over in many offices. The development confirms many cannot wait for Jonathan to get out of office on May 29.
As a result, the demand for the portrait of Buhari has soared with each going for as high as N1, 500 on many streets of Kano.
It was gathered that manufacturers of the portraits have run out of stock after making stupendous money . In one of the offices visited by our correspondent, Buhari’s portrait welcomes visitors at the reception.
With Buhari spotting a red cap , a spectacle and a white male flowing gown, the portraits has an inscription: His Excellency General Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR ), President Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria . A café operator, who craved for anonymity, along Civic Centre Road where the portrait of the president -elect was conspicuously hanged on the wall , said : Buhari has won the election and that was the change we were looking for and the change has eventually come.
So, we wouldn ’t want to waste time delaying the time for his inauguration before we start hanging his portrait .”

Don’t Pay For Bail Again – Police IG Warns Nigerians

Over the period, the police authorities have stressed that the payment for bail at police stations is illegal.
Again, the Acting Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has stated that it is improper for police officers to request for money from suspects for bail. Arase warned that he will no longer accept such from his men because his administration will have zero tolerance for corruption.
The police chief said he will not hesitate to prosecute any officer found guilty of such crime. Arase, addressing officers at his maiden visit to the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, also warned that henceforth, every police officer must have sufficient evidence to arrest and interrogate any suspect, which is the normal practice worldwide.
The police boss said he is ready to “resurrect the Enugu Intelligence Training School” to enhance the intelligence gathering of the Force. He added that officers would be retrained regularly to keep them abrea$t of the latest form of policing.
“I want to discourage custodian approach to policing,” Arase said, explaining that “this will reduce the cases of seeking for bail and unnecessary detention of suspects in our cells.”
“To put a stop to the issue of bribery, we have a platform in the Nigeria Police; in the intelligence department attending to all complains especially in the area of corruption,” he stated.
Arase advised his men to “feel free to send any complaint to that department,” stressing that “bail is free and all those offering money to the police are also corrupt.”
“I am pa$$ionate about the intelligence school that is why I am determined to invest on capacity building.
I am going to resurrect the Enugu Intelligence Training School and ensure that officers are trained and retrained.
They need to be up to date with the modern trend of investigation. It’s obvious that they do things out of ignorance,” the top cop said.

Van Persie banned from taking penalty kicks for United

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, has confirmed that Robin van Persie has dropped down the pecking order for penalty-taking duties.

The Dutch striker missed from 12 yards against West Brom on Saturday, as the Red Devils trailing 1-0 at Old Trafford – a game they eventually lost by the same margin.

Van Gaal revealed that he will soon appoint a new player for the role, with captain Wayne Rooney not in contention having missed a few weeks ago too.
When asked if his compatriot will continue taking penalties, he replied: “No. He is now at the end of the road. “It’s always like that. Wayne has missed also so, when you miss, you are at the bottom again.
“Wayne has already missed – twice, I believe – so we have penalties and we miss them.” Van Persie, who just returned from injury lay-off, has netted 10 times in 26 league games this season.
