DSS uncovers Boko Haram spy ring at Abuja airport

DSS uncovers Boko Haram spy ring at Abuja airport

The Department of State Services said it has uncovered a spy cell run by the Boko Haram sect at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.

The spy cell, according to the DSS, is apparently aimed at selecting targets for attack. In a statement late on Friday, the agency said it discovered the ring on Monday and was working with aviation authorities to pre-empt any attack.

The DSS said it had arrested a 14-year-old boy who said he had been instructed to spy on the airport’s security procedures, including passenger screening and boarding processes, and report what he had learnt. It said the man who directed the boy had not been located. “The service, in liaison with the aviation security of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, disrupted a spying network mounted by the Boko Haram terrorists,” Reuters quoted DSS spokesman, Tony Opuiyo, as saying in the statement.

“The service is working closely with major aviation stakeholders, especially the Aviation Security Department, to forestall any possible attack and to ensure adequate security at the airports.”

UNILAG Lecturer Raped 18-Yr-Old Admission-Seeking Girl

Unilag Lecturer

The picture above is that of a 42-yr-old lecturer of University of Lagos who allegedly raped a 18-yr-old admission seeking girl.

The police on Thursday arraigned him and his photo was released. Baruwa had taken his victim, who was seeking admission into the University of Lagos, Akoka, inside a study room, where he allegedly raped her.

The victim’s father, who belonged to the same landlords’ association with Baruwa in the Abesan, Ipaja area, had allowed his daughter to follow the suspect, on July 23, to UNILAG for an admission process. Baruwa was said to have, however, raped the girl inside one of the study halls at about 9am, when the duo got to the campus. It was also reported that the girl, who relayed the incident to her parents, was taken to a non-governmental organisation, Mirabel Centre, where she was tested.

The medical result had revealed that the teenager was violated. The matter was said to have been thereafter taken to the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, and also reported at the Surulere Police Division. Baruwa was subsequently arrested.

The OPD Director, Omotola Rotimi, had told PUNCH Metro that the office would write a letter to the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor on the incident. She had added that the OPD would fight for the girl, saying that Baruwa’s claim that the sexual intercourse was consensual was not a defence in law.

The 42-year-old lecturer was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Thursday. PUNCH reports that their correspondent observed the victim and her father in the court premises with agony written on their faces. The lecturer’s wife and other relatives were also observed in the court.

The victim’s father and their lawyer, however, were reluctant to speak with PUNCH Metro on the incident. Baruwa was arraigned by the police on one count of rape.

The charge read: “That you, Baruwa Afeez, of Block 73, Flat 2, Abesan Estate, Ipaja, Lagos, on July 23, 2015, at about 09.25 hours, at the Faculty of Business Administration Annex building, Room 8, University of Lagos, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did unlawfully rape one (name withheld), aged 18 years, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 258 of the Criminal Law of Justice, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate, Mrs. O. Awope, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum. Awope ordered that Baruwa should be remanded at the Kirikiri prison until his bail terms were perfected. The matter was adjourned till September 9, 2015 for trial.

End Time!!! Pastor Rapes Teenager During Night Vigil

A pastor in Anambra State has been nabbed for raping a teenager during the church's night vigil.

A pastor with a new generation pentecostal church located along Port Harcourt Road in Onitsha, Anambra State, identified as Nzube Ohuama, has been arrested after he allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl during a vigil programme organised by the church.

The young victim had gone with her parents to the church for the monthly vigil when the pastor lured her into a private room attached to the church and raped her. It was also reported that Ohuama had earlier prophesied to the girl's parents three days before the incident that she had an evil spirit that was tormenting her and he had to conduct a special prayer for her at the programme.

The pastor, according to information, had further warned the parents of the girl that if the evil spirit tormenting the girl was not exorcised, a lot of harm would continue dogging them, so they had given him the go ahead to deliver her of the foul spirit but instead of doing what he promised, he ended up defiling her.

It was gathered that at about 1 am when the vigil was in full swing, the pastor called out the girl and told the congregation that he had a special assignment he needed to carry out on her alone and took her to the private room. It was while he was at it that the girl's sister walked to the pastor's office and was surprised to hear her sister crying in pains. When the girl finally came out, she had blood stains on her and the sister pressured her into telling what Pastor Ohuama did to her.

They reported the rape to their parents who lodged a complaint at the Fegge Police Station and Pastor Ohuama was promptly arrested.

NAFDAC Busts Factory With Expired Canned Food In Lagos

nafdac

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), on Thursday said it had uncovered an illegal factory within the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos loaded with various expired canned food.

The agency’s Spokesman, Mr Anslem Okonkwor, disclosed this in a statement that the discovery was sequel to a special raid and enforcement operation in some markets in the metropolis by officers of the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of the agency.

It said that the expired canned food were worth millions of naira, adding that a 24-year-old man, Victor Okeke had been arrested in connection with the expired products.

“The factory, which was originally a one-room shop was used to stock, re-validate and distribute expired products, particularly, food condiments. “Some of the expired products discovered in the unhygienic factory included expired Maggi sauce with manufacturing date of 15/08/2011 and expiry date of 15/08/2014. “Other products included Amoy Dark Soy Sauce, Costa Corned Beef and Exeter Corned Beef among others.

“For the Costa Corned Beef, whether expired or not, the 24-year -old suspect, changed their labels to Exeter Corned Beef,’’ it said.

The statement also said that the suspect revealed that changing their labels was to attract patronage to the Costa corned beef because it was a faster moving brand than the name Costa in the market. It said that Mr Shaba Mohammed, the leader of the NAFDAC team, who addressed journalists shortly after the exercise, revealed that the agency had been on the trail of the alleged owner of the factory following intelligence report on his activities in the market.

Mohammed, an Assistant Director, Enforcement Operations, had also revealed that the suspect, who also claimed to be the managing director of the factory, was caught re-validating the expiry dates of Maggi Arome sauce and Amoy Soy sauce. “These products were smuggled into the country from Ghana and the expiry dates of 2014 shifted to August 2016,’’ he said. According to him, the products expired since August 15, 2014.

“We have arrested the suspect and also evacuated the remaining products in the illegal factory. We are also charging him for counterfeiting. Some of the products were not registered by NAFDAC. “What we found on ground here cannot be consumed. We saw two drums filled with ordinary water which he uses to immerse the products and the labels will remove without any traces and are replaced with re-validated labels,’’ Mohammed was quoted as saying.

He lamented that most of the re-validated products had been pushed into the market for unsuspecting consumers to buy. “Consuming such products could lead to terminal diseases such as liver and kidney diseases which are currently on the rise in the country.

“The sauces are sodium-based products that could lead to hypertension if consumed,’’ Mohammed was quoted as saying. He said that the suspect would be arraigned in court where the products evacuated would be used as exhibits against him. “Every single thing that is here is dangerous to human health,” the statement claimed.

NAN recalls that the agency in its determination to ensure stringent punishment for counterfeiters is currently reviewing its laws with a view to making convicted counterfeiters of drug and food products spend the rest of their lives in jail. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, had declared that the current law, which stipulated a fine of N500, 000 or 15-year jail term upon conviction, was inadequate.

According to Orhii, the new law will also make counterfeiting a non bail-able offence, adding that a whistleblower clause was also included in the new proposal. (NAN)

Robber In Jail After Trying To Carjack Vehicle Full Of Police Officers

Some criminals are either so stupid, dumb or just daring, as exhibited by a Florida, USA man, Dominique Albert, wanted to pull off one of the most masterful crimes ever witnessed.

Albert tried to carjack an unmarked police vehicle full of officers while wielding a knife and then decided it was a good idea to run away, still with his weapon in hand. The police then went on a foot chase of Albert who was on bail for a shoplifting charge. He was caught and taken back to jail where he belonged.

He has now been charged with carjacking, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and will likely be in jail for a long time.

WICKEDNESS: 20-yr-old Man Slits Niece's Throat After Stealing Her School Fees

A 20-yr-old student has been arrested after he tried to kill his niece after stealing her money.

Olajide Ajayi, a 20-year-old student of a college of education in Oyo State, has been arrested by the state Police Command for attempting to murder his niece, Opeyemi Ajala, by cutting her throat after deceiving her and stealing her school fees, reports the police in the state.

The suspect, according to the police, was said to have collected his Ajala's Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card with the intention of withdrawing the sum of N47,000 to help her pay her fees but instead of doing as he was told, he used the money to buy clothes for himself and his girlfriend.

When the niece, who is also a student of the institution, asked him for the teller with which he paid in the money, he hatched a plan to kill her when he could no longer bear the pressure from her, so as to cover his track.

On the fateful night of the incident, Ajayi went to his victim’s house with a knife and sneaked into her room where she was sleeping and after overpowering her, he slit her throat with the knife and left her for death. But unfortunately for him, the lady did not die and she managed to alert her neighbours who rushed her to the University College of Hospital, Ibadan, and reported the case to the police.

During interrogation, Ajayi confessed to his crime. “I collected the money, but I spent it. When the pressure from her was too much, and there was no way I could get the money to pay her back, I decided to kill her. One night, I went to her house with a sharp knife to kill her. I got to her house at about 8 pm; when I entered the room, I locked the door and pinned her head down on the bed. I did not allow her to shout. Then, I brought out the knife and slit her throat. When blood started gushing out and she was unconscious, I thought she was dead and I escaped.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, said Ajala who survived the attack miraculously, managed to call her neighbours on the phone and they rushed her to the hospital.

NUT Condemns JAMB’s 150 cut-off Marks for Polytechnics, Colleges

Nigeria Union of Teachers has condemned the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board policy that places cut-off marks for students seeking admission into Universities at 180 and 150 for those seeking admission into Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

jamb logo

The General Secretary of the NUT, Obong Obong made the disclosure in a statement signed by the union, describing the policy as derogatory, and highly discriminatory. NUT explained that the policy is targeted “at demeaning and lowering the professional status of teachers with its concomitant negative effect on the attainment of quality education in the country.

“It is of great disservice to the education sector where the best brains and students of distinction are placed in other courses while those with lower grades are pushed into teaching,” he said. The union further called for an immediate reversal of the policy adding that the government must ensure only students of distinction are admitted to be trained as teachers in all educational institutions in the county. Mr. Obong said in most advanced and developed countries, it is considered that a teacher’s ability to disseminate knowledge to students is dependent on his sound intellectual capability.

He explained that the government deliberately sourced for people with lower educational content to become teachers only to turn around and blame them for poor delivery.

“If this is allowed to stand, government should take full responsibility for the resultant short-comings that may be observed in our educational institutions in future from those teachers,” he said.

He said that NUT has in abundance very brilliant and effective teachers currently in service who should be nurtured for effective service delivery . “We however wish to warn that the teaching profession must not be made an all comers affair,” he said.
