2016 JAMB UTME Scores Will Be Released In 30 Minutes – Dibu Ojerinde

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde has stated that candidates participating in the 2016 Computer based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, will get their results after 30 minutes of the examination.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the examination, Ojerinde said that candidates will receive a graphical result of the test via SMS on their mobile phone numbers which they provided during registration.

However, the JAMB boss added that the specific scores will be released within the period of four days and would be checked online.

Analyzing the statistics of UTME registration, Ojerinde said there had been a steady decline since 2013 when the CBT was introduced.

In 2013, about 1.7 million people registered for UTME, in 2014, the number fell to 1.6 million, while about 1.4 million registered in 2015 examination.

However, this year the numbers of candidates who registered has increased to over 1.5 million.

Don’t Kill Rev King, Igbo Group Begs FG

Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria (NCSN) has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria not to make haste in carrying out the death sentence passed on Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, the General Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly, by the Supreme Court on Friday.

Leader of the group, Chief Udo Udeogaranya, made the appeal after the Supreme Court threw out Rev King’s appeal against the death sentence passed on him in 2007 by a Lagos High Court presided over by Justice Joseph Oyewole.

According to Udeogaranya, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government should “commute the sentence and grant him pardon as Nigeria stands to gain nothing by shedding blood.

“This plea is premised on the ground that many Nigerians still hold Rev. Ezeugo as their spiritual leader even in various prisons and that the initial trial in Lagos as purportedly put forward by his lawyer Mr. Olalekan Ojo and published by national dailies was a miscarriage of justice in which the lawyer made certain points that demanded a second thought.

“Ojo argued that his client did not commit the crime and was not at the scene of the incident. He insisted that the deceased, Ann Uzoh, had in two statements she made after the incident and before her death, stated that she got burnt in a generator accident and that the cleric was not responsible for her injuries.

“Ojo said the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, had tendered statements which stated that Ezeugo was not responsible for the burns that led to Uzoh’s death. He alleged that the trial Judge refused to admit in evidence, the statements he said exonerated Ezeugo of the crime.

“The lawyer further contended had those ‘vital exhibits’ been admitted rather than expunged by the trial judge, they would have operated to cast serious doubt on the case of the prosecution. He maintained that Justice Oyewole’s refusal to admit the exhibits in evidence ‘occasioned a great miscarriage of justice’ against his client.”

Kano Records Three Cases Of Lassa Fever

Dr Kabir Getso, Kano State Commissioner for Health, said on Monday in Kano that the state had recorded three confirmed cases of Lassa fever since the outbreak in December, 2015.
Getso who spoke while addressing newsmen, said two of the confirmed cases were recorded in Garun-Malam Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner said that the patients died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) on Dec. 2, 2015.

He said that the third confirmed case, a young businessman from Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, came to Kano from Benue last week.
The commissioner said that all the contacts were identified and followed up.
According to him, more than 70 per cent of them have either completed their 21 days follow up or tested negative.

He, however, said that another two suspected cases were currently on admission at the designated isolation and treatment centre at Yar’gaya Hospital.
Getso said the State Ministry of Health had taken several control measures to check the outbreak of the disease.

“The measures include the setting up of rapid response team, establishment of the Lassa fever Emergency Operation Centre and the setting up of the State Committee on the Control of Lassa fever,” he said.

Getso said the state government had provided personal protective kits and other logistics in the isolation centre for the management and control of the disease.
The commissioner commended the World Health Organisation for donating some materials for the treatment of the disease.

President Buhari Vacates For 5-Days, Osinbajo To Act As President

Ogun State Records First Case of Lassa Fever

Ogun State government on Thursday confirmed a case of Lassa fever in the state. According to reports, the victim is a 28-year old girl who has been taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, for intensive care.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Babatunde Ipaye, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The commissioner said the victim returned from Ebonyi State recently.

He added that two hospitals where the girl was first treated have been shut down. Ipaye said 60 primary contacts at the hospitals have also been placed on 21 days surveillance.

Zika Case Raises Concerns That Virus Can Be Transmitted Sexually

A case of the Zika virus being transmitted between sexual partners reported on Tuesday in Texas has raised new concerns about the transmission of the disease, which is typically spread by mosquitoes and can cause birth defects. The patient, whose gender has not been released, was the first person confirmed to have been infected with the virus in the US. Cases of Zika being spread by sexual contact have only rarely been reported, and health authorities had previously treated the idea that sexual transmission was possible as theory rather than documented science. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on Tuesday that the patient had contacted the virus after having sexual contact with someone who had travelled to a country where Zika is present.

The Dallas County health department said the sexual partner had travelled to Venezuela, but that the patient had not left the country, and had been infected in Texas. “Dallas County Health and Human Services has received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the first Zika virus case acquired through sexual transmission in Dallas County in 2016,” the department said a statement. Zachary Thompson, the health department’s director, said the case proved that Zika could be transmitted sexually. “Now that we know Zika virus can be transmitted through s*x, this increases our awareness campaign in educating the public about protecting themselves and others,” he said. “Next to abstinence, condoms are the best prevention method against any sexually-transmitted infections.” A total of 31 people in the US are believed to have been diagnosed with Zika in the US in the past 12 months, but all of those cases originated in Central and South America, where the virus is more prevalent. Symptoms are typically mild in adults, but babies whose mothers have contacted the disease can be born with smaller heads and brains. Brazil has been the country worst-affected by Zika, though the virus has been reported in more than 20 countries.

DASUKIGATE: Another Media House Returns N9 Million

According to Naijaloaded.com, Blueprint Newspaper’s Board of Directors have returned the N9 million the organization received from former President Goodluck Jonathan. The funds were intended to be compensation for copies of the newspaper seized by security agents in 2014. A SaharaReporters correspondent confirmed this development from a source at the Blueprint’s newsroom earlier today. The decision to return the money was announced by the newspaper’s Executive Director Salisu Umar. In 2014, Jonathan Administration funneled N120 million, through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), to the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN). The payments were allegedly made in compensation for the seizure of the newspapers by security agencies. The money was allegedly taken from the $2.1 billion which was intended to finance the war against Boko Haram. Instead, these funds were given to various individuals and organizations to help President Jonathan’s 2015 re-election bid by former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki. Several other newspapers that received money from the ONSA have already sent the money back. Mr. Umar confirmed the payment by noting a a Guarantee Trust Bank Draft which indicated that N9 million had been paid back. The full statement regarding the repayment can be found below. “The infraction on the rights of some newspapers by some agents of the Federal Government was widely reported in 2014. Specifically, the said agents seized numerous copies of the affected newspapers, including Blueprint. “And in line with the dictates of the rule of law, the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and the affected members chose to head to court for redress. “In its wisdom however, the Federal Government led by the then President Goodluck Jonathan, after a peace parley with the NPAN leadership, agreed to an out-of-court settlement, consequent upon which the affected media organisations , including Blueprint Newspaper, got N9 million each. “This decision, to any reasonable mind is very much in order as it simply demonstrated that the Federal Government rightfully admitted its wrongdoing. “However, in view of the unfolding development surrounding the arms deal investigation, which supposedly revealed that the restitution was paid from fund set aside for arms deal, the Board of Directors, has refunded same (N9 million) via a GTB bank draft No 04378726, drawn in NPAN’s name, dated February 1, 2016, and forwarded to NPAN Secretariat. In the least, this will certainly put to rest some misgivings that have been on over the compensation paid to media owners “May we also add here that more than any other thing, the board considers this a great sacrifice if that would only uphold the integrity of the media as a member of the Fourth Estate of the Realm and the true watchdog of the society. “Finally, we shall continue to abide by NPAN’s decision on this and any other matter bordering on its members’ interest.”
