Whatsapp To Stop Supporting Blackberry & Nokia Devices Soon

Earlier this week Whatsapp celebrated its 7th years

anniversary with its 1 Billion Active users, instead to break a bad news on such a good day, the team decided to wait till on Friday when they announced that: the app will soon be discontinued on BlackBerry and Nokia devices running those company’s operating systems.

Yes! that include the Blackberry 10 device, Though the new Android-powered Blackberry Priv slider phone might probaly survive this heat because it was built with Android OS.

According to Whatsapp Support
"As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use. So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms":

1. BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10
2. Nokia S40
3. Nokia Symbian S60
4. Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
5. Windows Phone 7.1

While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future

The Nokia S40 discontinuation will deeply affect developing countries like Nigeria because most people still uses old Nokia phone. The like of Nokia asha 200 and 203, Nokia 6100, 6200, Nokia c2 and c3 just to mention a few. I know most of us still love our old nokia phones. WhatsApp suggests “upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone” if you want to keep on using the service — if not, you’ll need to find another messaging service by the end of the year before the service got discontinued.
So do you think this is necessary?

Drop your comments.

Osun Will Pay Salaries - Gov. Aregbesola Assures

The Government of Osun on Sunday described as uncalled for insinuations that the state would not pay salaries of its workers in March as a result of the N6million federal allocation that accrued to it for the month of February.
The Government assured its workers that just as the Rauf Aregbesola administration had weathered the storm to pay salaries up to December, the government is executing with the support of all stakeholders, including the workers, a well-mapped out strategy for ensuring that workers are not made to pay more price for the dwindling allocation than they have done.

A statement by the Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, which was signed by its Director, Semiu Okanlawon, explained that the considerably reduced FAAC allocation is no more news to the state.
The state received less than N150 million from October till date, due the the repayment obligations for the Infrastructure Programs it has been prosecuting. In spite of the heavy obligations, Osun has paid more than N5billion in salaries between the same period.

Photo: Man Steals 7-month-old Baby In Lagos

Operatives of the Gender Department of Lagos State Police Command are currently investigating a 26-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping a seven months old baby. Vanguard learned that the suspect, identified as Happiness Umaru, was intercepted at Eric Moore in Surulere by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, at about 10p.m. on March 16. It was gathered that during interrogation Umaru initially claimed to be the biological father of the baby. He later confessed that he found the baby around Ijora Railway, when he went into a bush to answer the call of nature.

After the case was transferred to the Gender Department for further investigation, officers from the unit visited the scene of the incident, where they located the biological mother of the baby.

Mother’s account

According to the mother of the baby, Patricia Victor, “I laid my seven months old baby (Favour Victor) on the bed inside my house at about 8p.m., to buy food for my son.

“By the time I returned with the food for my older son, my baby had disappeared. I raised alarm and neighbours joined me in the search all thorough the night, but we did not find him.

“I did not know that police officers had arrested the man who stole my baby. Luckily, when they came the next day to investigate the case, they located me.” The baby has been released to the mother, while Happiness Umaru, the suspect, will be charged to court today.

DSS Produces ‘Dead’ Ekiti Lawmaker

According to reports  TheNationOnline detained member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Afolabi Akanni was yesterday presented to reporters at the headquarters of the Department of State Security (DSS).
Despite the allegations against him, the lawmaker representing Efon-Alaaye, who was rumoured to have died in custody, refused to speak or stand up to be paraded before press photographers. DSS spokesman Abdullahi Garba looked on as the detained lawmaker rejected entreaties to stand up.

He said the lawmaker was being held over very weighty but unspecified security issues. “You may have been aware of the recent situation in Ekiti State in which the DSS was accused of abducting four lawmakers. “The fact is that a lawmaker, Afolabi Akanni , was duly invited by the Service over some serious breaches involving state security and for which he has some explanations to make; these breaches fall under the purview of the DSS to investigate.
“This briefing has become necessary in order to debunk a rumour which is being spread in Ekiti State by some mischief makers to the effect that Akanni  has died in custody. “Nigerians and Ekiti people in particular have seen that Afolabi is hale and hearty as he is being presented to the media.

“The DSS, therefore, warns all those who have planned to make a meat out of this to desist from it and steer clear from trouble as the Service will not hesitate to prosecute anyone or persons who may engage in violent actions of any kind. “In a similar vein, all law-abiding Ekiti residents should go about their businesses as the Service assures them of full protection by security agencies,” Garba stated. Answering reporters’ questions, Garba said he was not in a position to say anything about when Akanni  would be taken to court, adding that investigations are still going on.

Unofficial sources say the lawmaker may need to answer questions bordering on the originality of the school certificate he used during the election and the death of Modupe Karimu, who was said to be involved in an alleged attempt to impeach Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The lawmaker, after prolonged prodding by reporters, said: “I slumped yesterday. I’m not dead. I’m alive but I’m sick. I have malaria, I did a test and they gave me a doctor but I don’t know why I am here. ”Although he walked in confidently and was directed to take a back seat before the briefing began, he refused to stand up, until reporters had left the hall.

We’ll Never Cover Up Corruption – Saraki

Bukola Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki says the present senate under his leadership will never cover corruption except if the information didn’t come to them.

Saraki said this while speaking with a team of editors of the London based “The Economist” newspaper at the weekend.

“Under my watch, the Senate will never cover corruption except if the information didn’t come to us”he said

According to a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Mohammed Isa, Saraki said the Senate is ever ready to partner with President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the success of the anti-corruption war.

The Senate, he said had already demonstrated such commitment through its interventions on many alleged corrupt transactions such as its swift investigation and adoption of a report on the management of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) that saved the nation about N7billion and the exposure of the inconsistencies in the 2016 budget.

The step, he said was a departure from the past where such reports were either watered-down or not presented for debate and adoption. He cited the report he presented to the last Senate on the over N1trillion fuel subsidy scam that never saw the light of the day.

In furtherance to the commitment, the Senate President said Nigerians would in the next few weeks be availed with the details of the National Assembly budget which will be a departure from the tradition of having one line item budget.

“For the first time we promised Nigerians to give out our budget breakdown. The committee will make its report available by next week. We are resolved to break the tradition of one line item,” he said.

Saraki said though party differences exist between the senators, citing example of the leadership tussle, he, however said, national interest and the desire of each senator to fulfil the promises made to Nigerians have become the guiding principle of the senate in their team work.

On the economy, he said the Senate has embarked on series of legislative interventions to create conducive environment for the private sector, as he said, “it is only when the private sector thrives that the issue of unemployment will be addressed and the nation’s GDP will increase.”

“Few days ago, we received a report on the laws that need to be amended in order of priority importance to ease doing business and overall private sector participation in the stimulation of Nigeria’s economy.

We will soon commence the implementation of the recommendations in the report in addition to pushing for the amendment of the Procurement Act to stimulate and protect our local industries,” he assured.

He blamed lack of firmness and consistency in policy implementation by the past administrations as the main obstacle for the growth of the private sector.

“If people have confidence that these policies have come to stay, nothing will stop them from coming to invest in the country,” he stressed.

He allayed the fears that the low prices of oil will have negative impact on the implementation of the 2016 budget, saying that, “what we need to do is to block leakages and show more transparency.”

“If we can block leakages, stop the wastages and institute a culture of transparency in governance, the revenue in-flow will not be substantially affected. Without these, even if oil is sold at more than a $100 per barrel, we will continue to witness a decline in revenue in-flow as we witnessed in the past,” Saraki said.
